Yesterday the board of OpenAI, makers of ChatGPT and DALL-E, fired their CEO, Sam Altman. I’d like to summarize the story, based on what little information is out there, then discuss what this might mean for the future of AI in higher education. I’d like to invite readers to share any news they’ve come across or ideas they’ve had. And I will also add comic bits for cheer, like this one:
Thank you for this lucid overview of possibilities and implications! Much appreciated sense-making so we don't feel so blown about by the soap opera. And thank you for emphasizing how much we need transparency around AI governance.
For academics, or anyone... it might be a just in time call for a pause moment. The things that seem to be happening purposefully by humans holding power, position, often with the need to control AI, some reactions are highly emotionally driven, given the complexities of AI, some at best are understood by few and (emotionally) reacted by many.
Oh those humans! Take a minute to step away be mindful of your own mental health... any significant change in perceived AI authority- if that's what you believe, might trigger reactions based on the unknown creating unfounded fears, fabrications of the truth etc. Sometimes like Anna mentions sense making, it really doesn't seem possible at this time...
Thank you!!!
